While Dr. Toney was busy working toward acquiring a degree in biology, he was an outstanding football player at Alabama A&M University, playing the position of defensive back. During those years, he received some accomplishments as a Bulldog: Outstanding defensive player of the year 1976-78 and MVP for two years at the Magic City Classic. He also received several letters from NFL teams offering him an opportunity to play professional football during his second and third years at the university. Dr. Toney was inducted into the Alabama A&M University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011. Dr. Toney's most recent recognition was by Zeta Phi Beta's Sorority, Incorporated Community Leadership Award presented in 2013. In the spring of 2013 Dr. Toney was appointed State Director for “Freedom Day USA” by the Platinum Circle of Dentist. On April 14th 2014 he was inducted into the Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame. He also received the Small Business Leadership Award in June 2014 from the Huntsville-Madison County Community.
Upon completion of dental school, he was certified by the standards of the North East Regional and the Alabama Dental Boards. Initially, Dr. Toney practiced in Gadsden, Ala., at the J.W. Steward Clinic for eight months. However, his true desire was to return to the Huntsville area to open his own practice. On September 17, 1985 he realized his dream and opened the doors to his dental practice.
Dr. Toney is a member of the American Dental Association and the National Dental Society, and a fellow at the International Congress of Implantology. He is a charter member of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity (Epsilon Kappa Boule') charter member of the Twenty Distinguished Men of Huntsville and Madison County, Psi Omega Dental Fraternity, a member of Leadership Huntsville (Class 10, 1997), and an active member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (Delta Theta Lambda Chapter) of Huntsville, Ala. Dr. Toney was recognized as a Mentor of the year by the 100 Hundred Black Men of Greater Huntsville, Ala. 2004, and a recipient of Best in Business Award in Huntsville, Ala.
Dr. Toney keeps himself busy in his church, Chelsea Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where he serves as an active Elder. He is an avid sports fan, including NASCAR racing at the Atlanta Speedway, Daytona, Talladega Raceway, and Las Vegas. Dr. Toney also enjoys working in his yard. He is married to Dr. Janice Draper Toney, and they are the proud parents of three children: Kolowa S. Witherspoon, Anthony Brian, and Aaliyah O'Jnice. They also have four grandchildren: Derrick Jr., Kalani, and Drew Witherspoon and Jaylin Brian Toney, and son-in-law Derrick Witherspoon.
